Learn about leaky roofs

If your roof has not been correctly installed and maintained, it can lead to leaks and other problems, such as leaks in plumbing, electrical and sanitation systems.

The good news is that a leaking roof can be easily repaired. Once a leak is detected, all access points to the roof must be sealed, including the damaged roof terrace and any torn, damaged, or missing shingles/tiles.

If a roof leak is visible, such as a missing tile or shingles, the most natural solution is to get a tin of high-quality roof mastic to close the hole. If the roof is leaking due to the lack of tiles and shingles, one easy way to repair or replace a house with a leaking roof is to get a tin of higher-quality roof mastics. Applied to temporarily stop the water from entering, then apply some mastic and some cement over it.

To ensure a good seal, you must press the mastic into any holes or cracks that exist. Also, make sure that you spread a few centimeters over the area to prevent further leaks.

If your roof is made of shingles and you find an area with an entry point, look for corrugated or damaged shingles. Then it would be best if you used asphalt or roof cement to seal the edges of the shingles. When your shingle is replaced, make sure that the nails are also covered with roof cement.

However, it is not recommended that homeowners try to fix roof leaks themselves unless they are either very handy or have roofing experience.

Remember that the damage that a leaking roof can cause needs to be repaired before the leak occurs. The damage may seem small and harmless, but it is still a severe problem for your home and property.

If your roof is more than 20 years old, you should not spend money repairing small leaks. Sometimes it is best to replace the roof, as most roofing systems, especially shingles, have around a 20-year lifespan.
